Owned by Michael Gehrken, Blackburn Estate lies in Tanzania, deep in the heart of Karatu. The farm is distinguished by the taste of its coffee and Michael's commitment to ecologically-sound farming.
For many years, Blackburn Estate has had a steady relationship with Mercanta. Grant Rattray, an employee at Mercanta from 2002 to 2010, always gave a supportive hand at work. He adored Tanzania and was a close friend of Michael but unfortunately, passed away in 2019. With his passing, a part of Blackburn Estate was preserved in his honour, coined as Grant's Valley. The 5-hectare area is brimming with life and coffee trees, a true gem of Blackburn Estate.
The two year old plot has just yielded its first harvest with the Nyassa varietal. For this lot, only ripe cherries are meticulously handpicked and undergo a unique process. The external pulp is removed by hand and the beans are submerged in water for 18 hours to ferment, before drying on raised beds under the sun.
Expect yellow stonefruits at first sip, coupled with tangy notes of dried oranges that ends off with an almond like finish.
Recommended to rest beans for 7-10 days from roast date before consuming.
