Chapter 3: Behind Every Cup

Behind every cup you've had at Alchemist is a person. The coffee you drink is shaped by our baristas, the people who prepare it with utmost care and precision.

Everyone on our founding team started behind the bar. Long before working behind the scenes, they learned coffee through repetition, service, and daily practice. Dialling in. Serving guests. Paying attention to small details, again and again. That shared experience shaped our coffee language, our structures, and our culture.

The name Alchemist was inspired by our baristas. Like alchemy, our work is about the discipline of craft, patience, and mastery. Those closest to the process shape how each cup is made, and how the company continues to move.

From the beginning, we set out to build not just a coffee company but a company of baristas. That meant rethinking what a career in coffee could look like. Stability, consistent hours, and a rhythm of work that mirrored everyday life is what mattered the most. These weren’t operational decisions but human ones, made with the intention of allowing people to see baristas as a long-term path.

Growth has always been central to this approach. We prioritise internal opportunities and create space for baristas to develop new skills, take on responsibility, and grow alongside the company. If coffee is to be taken seriously as a profession, then the people within it should experience the same progression, dignity, and continuity as any other career. In doing so, we hope to gently challenge the idea of barista work as a stepping stone, and instead recognise it as a meaningful, evolving vocation shaped by commitment and care.

Our continued expansion is a way to widen these opportunities, to offer more pathways, and to support more baristas in building lasting careers within coffee. As Alchemist grows, so does the community that powers it.

Our baristas are the final guardians of the craft. All the work that comes before sourcing, roasting, refinement relies on the attention given at the bar. Without care at this final step, even the best coffee can fall short. This is where effort becomes experience, and why the role of the barista remains central to everything we do.
